deze keer in de Middellandse Zee.
The World Underwater Federation CMAS was founded in 1959 and by now it comprises of 130 national federations from 5 continents. In addition to organize international underwater sport events it is at the forefront of technical and scientific research and development. It can be associated with elaborating one of the oldest and most extensive dive training systems (http://www.cmas.org/en).
In order to increase the public awareness toward underwater activities, CMAS decided to establish and execute a scientific expedition in 2016 to the wrecks of the Jutland battle of 1916 which was the biggest naval action in the modern history. This expedition was planned and performed in a close cooperation with UNESCO under the umbrella of the convention on protection of the underwater cultural heritage signed in 2004.
During these expeditions CMAS would like to focus onto those wreck sites, which has clear historical and/or scientific importance. Therefore in 2018 – last centennial year of the First World War – the underwater relics of the Great War will be the main focus of our activity. The potential outcome of this project is so important for science, history and culture that CMAS and UNESCO have decided to run this expedition hand in hand. UNESCO is therefore not just supporting part in this project but is an active and equal partner together with CMAS.
We plan to organize an international expedition that will travel from the Mediterranean to the Adriatic in the summer of 2018. We call it a ‘Stafeta’ (exchange) expedition because we will give the participants the opportunity to join us for one week (or more) and then to hand over the torch to a new team of divers. This is the first time that such an expedition has been organized in the diving community and the history of the wreck-diving. This expedition will consist of two main parts. Each pillar will have a 2 times one-week excursion to the dive area.
1. The first part will be based between Tunisia, Sicilia and Sardinia focusing on the North-African wrecks as the South-European wrecks. We will concentrate our activities along the Skerki Bank (Esquirques).
2. The second part in the Adriatic will commemorate the end of the First Great War, and heroes of the war at sea, including deep research of the most important battleship of the Austro-Hungarian Navy, the SZENT ISTVÁN, which is scientifically unique.
Beside the dive expedition at such we try to establish also a medical project – a medical examination under the lead of experienced doctors
OUR DIVE VESSEL
We can organize such an expedition thanks to the support of the dive vessel Cdt. Fourcault and her crew. All safety precautions are on board. This ship is fully equipped to perform such dive expeditions in the middle of the sea. This is a Marathon expedition and you can decide in which part of it you want to participate! You can book for one week only or for a bundle of weeks.3
